Maori Side to Meet Springboks
A strong and experienced New Zealand Maori Rugby team to play the touring Springboks at Eden Park on August 25 has been announced by the selectors, Messers T. A. French, T. Anderson, R. M. Love and Dr M. N. Paewai.
Three members of the team P. T. Walsh, W. N. Gray and S. F. Hill, have played for the All Blacks this season and each of the 15 players and four reserves has previously played for New Zealand Maori teams.
The team is:-
Fullback.-M. Walters (North Auckland).
Threequarters.- A. Wilson (Bay of Plenty), P. T. Walsh (Counties), D. F. Menzies (Auckland), T. Katene (Wellington), one to be omitted .
Five-eights.-W. N. Gray (Bay of Plenty, Captain), E. H. Whatarau (Counties).
Halfback.- K. R. Davis (Auckland).
Back Row.- H. Potae (East Coast).
Middle Rod.-A. Pryor (Auckland), H. Hiha (Hawke’s Bay), S. F. Hill (Canterbury), H. K. Emery (Auckland).
Front Row.- G. Koopu (Hawke’s Bay), T. Kite (Wellington), C. Hohaia (Wellington). Reserves.- Backs: One threequarte and J. P. Taitoko. Forwards: R. S. Clarke (North Auckland), M. Bevan (Wellington). R. Keepa, of Bay of Plenty, was not available.
The Maori team will have a preliminary match against Counties at Waiuku on August 22.
